The main function of the rest of the proteins is simply to exist in such a state as to allow the heme to properly bind to the proper gases depending on the current location of the RBC. The chains, 2 alpha and 2 beta, morph and twist themselves around a molecule from the Embden-Meyerhof pathway in the mature RBC, 2,3-DPG. This 2,3-DPG molecule becomes assoicated with a molecule of hemoglobin with changes in the shape of the globulin chains. It is the 2,3-DPG molecule that determines the hemoglobins' affinity for O2.
