What type of lumber is comparable to Pine in terms of resisting warping and strength?
Q. I am a painter and I recently moved from the east coast to the west coast. I usually use clear pine to build stretchers for my paintings, stretchers have to be straight and resist warping. Pine seems impossible to get a hold of here, and I am wondering what is a comparable type of wood?

A. Here is the reason why you can't find 'pine' on the West Coast: In different parts of the country different wood has different names sometimes. Don't ask me why this is so, but it is. You can't find 'pine' in the stores or lumber yards like Home Depot because they don't call it pine on the west coast. What they have, that actually is Western Pine, is what they call Fur. Or Fir. It's called by either names. The so-called pine trees of the west, like the Oregon Pine, are actually a variety of fir. Confusing, huh? I use these fir strips all the time to make my own stretcher bars. Home Depot sells them in 'Firring Strips' in 1" x 2" x 8' lengths. What scale of train set is comparable to the match box cars scale?
Q. I want to build a play set for my 8 yr old , allowing her to use her matchboxes as the cars on the set. Although I'm not quite sure which scale of trains & buildings would be most comparable HO scale, N scale, Z scale ... could someone please help me? Thank you!

A. Matchbox cars were sized to fit the box, so smaller cars got made larger, larger ones smaller -- pick the one that looks right to you. That said, hobby shops and Wal-Mart are now carrying many 1/87 automobiles (HO scale). The Wal-Mart ones are cheaper, but the hobby shop ones are usually more detailed. For an 8 year old I'd choose HO scale or even 3 rail O scale, depending on her fine motor skills. I used to work in a hobby shop, and found that little hands worked best with big trains because it was easier for the kids to rerail the trains. The larger trains are also made to stand up to being played with. HO has a slight cost advantage, but the 3 rail actually can take sharper curves. what suv is comparable to the jeep cherokee?
Q. i really love the jeep grand cherokee. i have been looking at used models. i'm pretty flexible as long as its a jeep cherokee. but i know they are not the most reliable. what's are the jeep cherokee's major flaws? what other suvs are comparable to it?

A. You need to nail down if you're talking about Cherokees or Grand Cherokees. Two entirely different vehicles, one being very reliable the other not.
