A portmanteau (pronounced /pɔrtmænˈtoʊ/ ( listen)) or portmanteau word is used broadly to mean a blend of two (or more) words and their meanings into one, and narrowly in linguistics fields to mean only a blend of two or more function words. Meaning"Portmanteau word" is used to describe a linguistic blend, namely "a word formed by blending sounds from two or more distinct words and combining their meanings." Such a definition of "portmanteau word" overlaps with the grammatical term contraction, and linguists avoid using the former term in such cases. As an example: the words do + not become the contraction don't, a single word that represents the meaning of the combined words. A distinction can be made between the two by noting that contractions can only be formed with two words that would otherwise appear in sequence within the sentence, whereas a "Portmanteau word" is typically formed by combining two or more existing words that all relate to a singular concept which the new portmanteau is meant to describe. An example being the well-known portmanteau word "Spanglish", referring to speaking a mix of both Spanish and English at the same time. In this case, there is no logical situation in which the speaker would say "Spanish English" in place of the portmanteau word in the same way they could say "do not" in place of the contraction "don't", or "we are" in place of "we're". "Gerrymandering", or redrawing of political lines to get yourself more votes, comes from Elbridge Gerry's last name and the word "salamander". Also, many scandals have the suffix -gate, such as Monicagate, a portmanteau of Monica (Lewinsky) and Watergate (one of the most well known presidential scandals). You may be also familiar with the colloquialism "chillax", a portmanteau of "chill" and "relax". And, of course, how about that fictional animal, the liger (lion tiger)? P.S. I love the portmanteaus you listed. Answered by # - Fri Nov 7 01:13:11 2008 What are your opinions on Reganomics?
Q. (from wikipedia.org) Reaganomics (a portmanteau of "Reagan" and "economics") refers to the economic policies promoted by United States President Ronald Reagan. The four pillars of Reagan's economic policy were to:[1] reduce the growth of government spending, reduce marginal tax rates on income from labor and capital, reduce government regulation of the economy, control the money supply to reduce inflation. The economy in the 80s did improve under Reagan's leadership. It just is debatable whether Reganomics is the reason why, or if it's a good, and helpful strategy for today's economy. What are your thoughts? Asked by Erez S - Sun Sep 14 22:14:23 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Economic growth has been lower and the unemployment rate higher on average since 1981 than is was in the period from 1946 to 1970 but this was true for most of the industrialized nations and the US growth per capita has been about average. Income inequality has increased much more in the US than it has in other nations, We have seen a huge increase in the national debt and the interest on it is 19% of the federal budget We have created more jobs than other nations, but many of them have been filled by immigrants. I think we would have done just as well with conventional policy and that his policies may be responsible for some of the problems we are now facing. We have seen three bubbles in asset markets since the marginal tax… [cont.] Answered by meg - Sun Sep 14 23:01:34 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Portmanteau" Film Festival, Modern catch a 'New Wave' in exhibition
